Charlestown

Skip bin hire in Charlestown

Charlestown is the busiest part of Lake Macquarie: a shopping centre with suburbs packed around it, smaller blocks than the lake average, and a lot of unit and townhouse living. Space to put a bin is the constraint here, not what goes in it.

What Charlestown jobs look like

Unit and townhouse work, more than anywhere else around the lake. Kitchen and bathroom refits, flooring, and the turnover that comes with a lot of rented and strata housing. Loads are bulky rather than heavy and the hard part is usually getting the bin close enough to be useful.

The houses in the older streets at Kahibah, Dudley and Garden Suburb are a different job: post-war brick and weatherboard being renovated properly, which means plaster, flooring, cabinetry and often a fair amount of tile.

Where the bin can sit in Charlestown

Tighter than most of the lake. Driveways are narrower, blocks are smaller, and townhouse and unit complexes usually have no spare flat ground that belongs to any one owner. Where the driveway will not take it, a visitor space or an apron is the next best thing, and both need someone's agreement first. Parked cars are the other daily reality.

Tell us the access width if you are in a townhouse complex or a battleaxe block. It is the thing most likely to change which size we recommend.

Council approval

If the bin has to go on the road or the footpath, that is Lake Macquarie City Council's approval and their process. On strata land it is the building's permission you need, and the council may not be involved at all.

Charlestown questions

  • Is Charlestown in Newcastle or Lake Macquarie?

Lake Macquarie City Council. It surprises people because of how close it is to Newcastle, but the boundary sits north of it, and it matters as soon as the bin has to go on the street.

  • Can I get a bin at a townhouse or unit?

Often, but the flat ground is usually common property rather than yours, so the strata or the manager has to agree. Send a photo of the spot and the access and we will tell you what fits.

  • What size fits a narrow driveway?

A 2m³ or 3m³ will go where a 6m³ will not, and for a bathroom or a single room that is usually enough anyway. It is better to book the size that fits the space than the one that fits the job and cannot be delivered.

  • What about the tiles from a bathroom?

Tile, screed and brick are heavy, so a bathroom strip can reach a weight limit while the bin still looks half empty. Mention it and we will size for the weight rather than the volume.

  • Do you cover Redhead and Dudley?

Yes, along with Whitebridge, Kahibah, Jewells and the rest of the eastern suburbs. Coastal blocks out that way can be sandy, so mention the surface.
